Workplace risk assessment review checklist
By Health Safety Courses editorial team · Occupational health and safety training editors
When to review
Review on your planned date and sooner after near misses, injuries, new equipment, layout changes, new substances, staffing changes, or when controls are routinely ignored.
Check the scope still matches the work
Confirm the assessment describes the task as it is done today—not an idealised version. Walk the area if you can and note anything missing from the written record.
Hazards and people at risk
For each significant hazard, check you still list everyone affected (employees, contractors, visitors). Note groups who may need extra consideration where relevant.
Controls in use
Ask whether each control is actually followed under pressure. If people work around a rule, treat that as a signal to redesign the task or control—not only to retrain.
Record and communicate
Update the assessment, version or date, and tell supervisors and workers what changed. Keep evidence proportionate: photos, marked-up plans or short notes are enough for many workplaces.
Using this with training
Use this checklist after completing a risk assessment course to sanity-check live documents. It does not replace legal advice or a competent person where your sector requires one.
